There are many factors that impact our gut microbiome but I always like to make the distinction between two aspects:

  1. what affects the kinds of microbes we get in early life, that will become what I call the ‘foundation microbiome’
  2. and what affects our microbiome once it has settled in our gut after infancy, our ‘established microbiome’
